Como foco de sus actividades, UMALCA decidió promover el Congreso Latino Americano de Matemáticos, el que se realizarán cada cuatro años en un país de la región.

Uno de los objetivos principales de la 2a. Asamblea General de la UMALCA, que tuvo lugar en Olmúe, Chile, en los dias 9 y 10 de octubre de 1998, fue decidir respecto al formato científico y procedimientos apropiados para la organización de estos Congresos. En esta Asamblea quedo establecido también que el primer congreso fuese realizado en el Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) en las fechas señaladas.

CONFERENCIA ESPECIAL "RECONOCIMIENTO DE UMALCA"

El Comité Ejecutivo y el Consejo Científico de UMALCA decidieron crear una Conferencia Especial "Reconocimiento de UMALCA" - UMALCA Medal Lecture- para destacar a matemáticos brillantes que actúan permanentemente en América Latina. La conferencia será dictada con ocasión de cada Congreso Latinoamericano de Matemáticos. La elección de los Conferencistas será hecha por los organismos antes nombrados, como forma de estimular y reconocer la actuacíon científica en América Latina, entre matemáticos que tengan menos de 45 años de edad al día de comienzo del Congreso. Este año el matemático elegido fué el Profesor Marcelo Viana del IMPA.
